Stephen has practiced Buddhist meditation for over 15 years
and is a qualified coach, counsellor and yoga teacher. He taught meditation at
The Lotus Room on Sydney’s Northern Beaches for many
years.
Bringing together his passion for psychology, spirituality and communication, Stephen created
HeartMind, a business focused on assisting people to live a saner, more meaningful life, and to help create an environment where time for reflection, time for silence, the creation of heartfelt meaning and matters of the soul are valued as vital aspects of living a fulfilling life.
Stephen sees clients for Holistic Counselling,
Transformational Coaching and Meditation Instruction in
Mosman. By combining these modalities, Stephen offers an approach that aims to assist clients to find and build a sense of inner stillness and strength, to resolve issues from the past, to build on current strengths and to create a vision for the future.
As an academic researcher at the University of Edinburgh and then at the University of Western Sydney, Stephen is founder of the model of interaction known as
Communicative Musicality, which is concerned with the non-verbal ‘narratives’ that underlie all communication, especially between a caregiver and infant. He has held a number of nationally competitive research grants investigating mother-infant communication and presented on this topic both nationally and internationally. Stephen has published in peer-reviewed
academic journals, written book chapters, and is
principal-editor of Communicative Musicality: Exploring the basis
of human companionship published by Oxford University Press
in 2009.
Stephen is also a well regarded public speaker. In 2008 he
was invited to present at the World Association of Infant Mental Health in
Yokohama, the Music & Medicine Conference in Vienna, and The Tavistock Institute in London. Past
presentations include the Institute of Australasian
Psychiatrists Conference (Sydney, 2006), the World Association of Infant Mental Health Congress (Paris, 2006 and Melbourne, 2004), Ninth Infant Mental Health Congress, Miyazaki, and Keio University Medical Society (Tokyo, 2005), World Congress of Music Therapy (Brisbane, 2005) and on various occasions for the Australasian Marcé Society
and Australian Association of Infant Mental Health. Stephen is also known for his talks on meditation and Buddhism around Sydney.
Stephen maintains a connection with the University of Western Sydney,
and served as a Board Member for Karitane, a health facility for mothers and their babies,
from 2004 - 2007.
