Do you feel your mind has a life of its own? That the noise inside your head is getting the better of you?
Meditation is the practice of simply being. In simply being, there is opportunity for rest and nurturing of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the art of really sensing the world, seeing its glorious colours, seeing the beauty of other people.
In order to quieten the mind so that the world can be more fully experienced, it is helpful for the mind to have something on which it can rest its awareness. Bringing the mind into awareness of the breath can be helpful. By simply following the in-breath and out-breath, an anchor of awareness is created. Continually coming back to this anchor of awareness is meditation. As thoughts arise of the future or of the past, we can simply label them ‘thinking’ and then return to the breath. Meditation is continually coming back home to yourself.
Expected outcomes of meditation practice include greater acceptance and compassion for yourself and others and an enhanced feeling of belonging in the world.
